BIOGRAPHY
Vahid Sharifian’s bright-hued portraits traffic in themes of sexuality, objectification, and voyeurism. His subjects range from straightforward if narratively ambiguous—renderings of women lounging on couches or caught in the light of camera flashes to more surrealistic scenes full of distended genitalia set in Salvador Dalí-esque expanses. Sharifian’s work operates on multiple levels of subjectivity; his common motifs of sex and tabloid-esque subject matter question why his viewer is looking. Sharifian has exhibited in New York, London, Paris, Copenhagen, and Venice, among others, and his works have been shown at such institutions as the Chelsea Art Museum, the Institute of Contemporary Arts, the Gwangju National Museum, and the Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art in Denmark. instagram.com/vahidsharifian
