Review of Red Fever, an installation for Bodies of Resistance, a traveling exhibition, Real Art Ways, Hartford's Center for Contemporary Culture, CT and NSA Galleries, Durban, South Africa, 2000 "Third world and feminist perspectives are present in Skowmon Hastanan's witty, but disturbing, Red Fever. Conflating the diagrammatic plans of slave ships with contemporary passenger jets, Hastanan highlights the spread of the virus through the tourist sex trade" - by Virginia MacKenny, South Africa, January 2000 "International ramifications are the theme of Skowmon Hastanan's Red Fever. Ms. Hastanan makes a visual analogy between the packed holds of historical slave ships and the seating arrangements of modern aircraft. The piece includes timetables of various airlines that travel to South Asia. Ms. Hastanan's message is that many flights cater to the international sex trade, and children are desirable because they are thought of as disease-free. Ms. Hastanan sees this as a new form of slavery." - By William Zimmer, The New York Times, Sunday, December 26, 1999 |
