TODD
P., "best thrower of no-bullshit far-flung indie-rock shows"
(Village Voice Best Of New York 2004), presented a noisefest of awesome
proportions in a gritty old-New York parking lot, at the foot of the 59th
Street Bridge at Queens Plaza, Long Island City, NY |
The #7
train, on it's way to another NY Mets losing season at Shea Stadium, loomed
overhead, providing more of a constant beat than the majority of noisefest
"bands" |
this
is Necking. they did not neck, they did not knock, or get neckid. they
did rock noisily with 2 drummers (one who miked out), and a guitarist
who kept the mike pretty much IN his mouth their entire "performance".
|
This
is not Matt and Kim. It's Eloe Omoe. Rhymes with Hello Homo? they made
noise |
another
of the first bands to play, made noisy saxy noise. note guy with water
jug, he was more interesting |
PARTS |
& |
LABOR |
Parts & Labor, one of Jefe's Fest faves, were one of the few bands with melody and/or any type of real "rock combo" element. Drummer Christopher Weingarten, wearing his Big Bear t-shirt, flailed, while BJ on bass/keys/electronics sang and wailed and guitarist/keys/electronicist Dan Friel wailed. flailing, wailing, railing... let's make some noise! In a good way! The video guy just wants to be one of the guys... get outta the way, ya fuck! website descript: Brooklyn analog noisepunk trio Parts & Labor weaves infectious melodies around the searing electronic noise of malfunctioning toys. hear P&L here: http://www.partsandlabor.net/av.html |
we
met three guys from Thailand (one thai guy and two yanks), from a band
called The Darlings. They know good music! With beers in hand all day,
you could see each one of them boppin in mosh pits till the wee hours!
Sawadee! |
Noah
Lyons, comix artist and friend of bands, sold buttons on the sidelines,
and frequented a couple mosh pits. The creator of the simplistic yet entertaining
"Retard Riot" zine, the lady and I spent quite an amusing time
checking out his hundreds creative buttons, before deciding upon a few
$1 gems. Dig the Ronald McNazi painting. |
this
little window was above most of the bands who set up at the bottom of
the parking lot. It looked pretty cool, my amazing camera with it's 12X
zoom did a great job of capturing a hazy background. Dig it! |
MORE BANDS
This
is Free Blood, not a hot band, but this is a pretty hot pic! Even with
the spotlight shined right in my fucking eye. Kinda like ESG with deep
beats and shitty rapping vocals on top, I couldn't figure out why they
were performing here, if you could call it that. 2 of the thai guys said
the bass was way off, don't know about that, but the bass player looked
pissed after the set. Suck! My thanks to the fat horny girls who squeezed
in front of us when the band went on. Cunts! |
Japanther
Rock! First saw them in Miami, backing up a puppet show! We knew we had
to see them perform! Not sure why they're playing a Noisefest, because
these guys are all about simple melodies, like the Ramones without a guitar.
We're talking bass and drums, and sometimes the drummer just sang, while
electronic drums and toy keyboards played for the kids, who moshed the
way moshing should be... Respectfully! Props to Ian and Matt from Japanther,
who hung out with everyone all day, and seemed to be crowd faves... other
than the Bolt! Thai guy was pretty drunk, he moshed too! |
this
is Japanther Matt, skateboarding the parking lot rather well, in the shadows
of a lightning bolt! |

Ms.
Skow looking pretty on her Skowtowel, and looming mysteriously in the
shadows of dusk of the lot |
I
don't know who this is a picture of, but the devil is enjoying the noise
immensely! Cool pic!! |
USA IS A MONSTER
USA
IS A MONSTER, a duo of immense proportions! Not only are they 2 of the
tallest guys in the parking lot, but they hung all day, hanging and checking
out bands and showing support. They made a cacaphony of sounds, both noisy
and melodic, the drummer led the paces with a Mitch Mitchell-esque rhythmical
sense, and the guitarist played with some pedals that made his guit sound
like 3 guitars or more! Totally cool! On LOAD Records! |
These
are strange and arty pics of USAISAMONSTER. The middle one up top is a
cut and paste, but still looks cool. The arty shots below are just that.
I got clocked in the head by some guy doing karate moves in the pit. Thanks
a lot Bruce Loser Lee! |
LIGHTNING BOLT
last
but not least... |
Since
their massive record RIDED THE LIGHTNING came out, it seems that Lightning
Bolt have become everyone's darlings in the noise community, I heard Boltage
influence in most of the bands at Noisefest Parking Lot! Under the influence
of the Bolt! While this lame Japanese girl duo played yards away, the
Bolt set up shop with a massive stack of amps, while the bass player seemed
to shop around for an outlet for his 1000 foot extension chord. The gal
and I hung in front of the drumset, but by the time the Japanese show
ended, we were squeezed out by the throng of Lightning Bolt fans and couldn't
see shit or take pictures without jumping up and down in the pic and snapping
shots. I had my camera on some weird setting, made it look like Lightning
Bolts were coming out of the sky! Maybe they were, you just coudn't see
them with the naked eye! Jefe provides commentary below... |
I
like the looks on people's faces, enthralled by the Bolt. If you look
closely, you can see the bass player. The bolt of magic lightning is christening
him in the top right! Nice!
|
People
going nuts in the tiny pit. Folks wedged in on window ledges. Ledge wedge.
I gave my camera to a woman on a ledge, whom I thought had a sight advantage,
she took a couple lame shots. My fault for leaving the setting on "lightning".
The invisi-bolt is hitting the drummer in the above right, you just can't
see him. Thrash me!

Final
shot of the Bolt taken by window ledge woman. Thank you! |
